A Quicky

“…in all of history, has anyone ever seen bacterium become anything other than bacterium?”

So said Twitter user, and full time moron, GospelTruth today. Well, you know what, god boy? Until very recently no-one had seen the Earth as a globe, but perspective is a wonderful thing. Sometimes you have to look at something over a vast period of time, or from a great distance to see what it’s really like.

Never flat, despite no-one seeing it as a globe until very recently

  1. You are correct in that sometimes you have to look at something over a vast period of time or from a great distance to see what it is really like however, is “just wait and it will become” a scientific statement? Or is, "no one can live long enough to see the transitions from simple to complex" a scientific statement? Or what about, is "just give it enough time and it will happen." a scientific statement?

  2. 'just wait and it will become' is not a 'scientific statement', and you'll be hard pressed to hear anyone other than creationist building strawmen using it.Your second statement, that no-one can live long enough to see transistion take place is partially true. Dramatic change takes deep ages, but speciation has been witnessed, at first hand, many times.Your final statement is just the first reworded.

  3. You state, "but speciation has been witnessed" but has anyone witnessed bacterium become anything other than bacterium?

  4. Do you understand just how long it takes for things to change? And do you have any idea of just how long it took life to emerge and become complex? Here's thing – mankind has been around for 150,000 years…that's 1/20,000th of the age of the Earth. Major speciation takes aeons.
