Big Claims from Joe Cienkowski

I know, this is turning into ‘Joe Cienkowski Weekend’, but I wanted to have a quick look at the claims made above.

‘The Bible is the complete, inerrant Word of God. There’s nothing wrong factually, geographically, historically or scientifically’

Let’s nip through those claims in order, and see if they stand up….

1. The Bible is factually correct

So the Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, … You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust…” (Genesis 3:14)

Snakes do not eat dust.

2. The Bible is Geographically correct

“As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples, saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt there which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you,’Why are you doing this?’ tell him, ‘The lord needs it and will send it back shortly.’” They went and found a colt outside in the street, tied at a doorway. As they untied it, some people standing there asked, “What are you doing, untying the colt?” They answered that Jesus had told them to, and the people let them go. When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it, he sat on it. Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had out in the fields. Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the coming of the kingdom of our father David! Hosanna in the highest!” Jesus entered Jerusalem and went to the temple. He looked around at everything, but since it was already late he went out to Bethany with the twelve.” (Mark 11:1-11)

Theologian D. E. Nineham, in his book ‘Saint Mark’ (Westminster John Knox Press, 1978),

The geographical details make an impression of awkwardness, especially as Bethphage and Bethany are given in reverse order to that in which travellers from Jericho would reach them…and we must therefore assume that St Mark did not know the relative positions of the two villages on the Jericho road…(pp. 294-295)

 3. The Bible is historically correct

Ezekiel 26: 1-13, “Now it came about in the eleventh year … that the word of the Lord came to me saying, 2 son of man, because Tyre said concerning Jerusalem … 3 therefore, thus says the Lord God, ‘Behold I am against you, O Tyre, and I will bring up many nations against you, … 4 and they will destroy the walls of Tyre and break down her towers’ … 7 for thus says the Lord God, ‘Behold I will bring upon Tyre from the north Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, king of kings … 9 and the blow of his battering rams he will direct against your walls, and with his axes he will break down your towers. 10 … when he enters your gates as men enter a city that is breached, 11 with the hoofs of his horses he will trample all your streets. He will slay your people with the sword; and your strong pillars will come down to the ground. 12 Also, they will make a spoil of your riches and a prey of your merchandise, break down your walls and destroy your pleasant houses, and throw your stones and your timbers and your debris into the water. 13 So I will silence the sound of your songs, and the sound of your harps will be heard no more. 14 … for I the Lord have spoken,’ declares the Lord God.”

Tyre is still there, and Nebuchadnezzar failed to destroy it.

4. The Bible is Scientifically correct

Lev. 11:20-3 All fowls that creep, going upon all four, shall be an abomination unto you. Yet these may ye eat of every flying creeping thing that goeth upon all four, which have legs above their feet, to leap withal upon the earth; even these of them ye may eat; the locust after his kind, and the bald locust after his kind, and the beetle after his kind, and the grasshopper after his kind. But all other flying creeping things, which have four feet, shall be an abomination unto you.

Insects never have 4 feet, nor do birds. The Bible also claims that rabbits chew the cud, they don’t.

That was simple enough. Is Joe Cienkowski ever going to get anything right?
